Friday, June 26, 2009 Another perfect morning, warm, calm, and after a breakfast of eggs, bacon, cheese, and peppers (along with a much lighter food pack since the frozen items were gone) we were good to go. We paddled and portaged through the Basswood River without incident and headed north through Crooked looking to make it to Gardner Bay. Once on Crooked we found a strong wind out of the North which made paddling difficult and concerned me about approaching weather. The boys were excited to start fishing so we trolled a little on Crooked to no avail. We made it to Gardner bay about 3pm and found a great campsite on a point which rounded to a ledge that dropped to about 20ft. We set up camp and the boys immediately grabbed their poles and solicited suggestions as to lures and tactics. (None of which are experienced fishermen). One grabbed a jig, one grabbed a rapala, and one grabbed a top water skitterpop. It wasn’t ten minutes until the rapala produced a good eating walleye and another 5 before the jig produced tw0 northern. That’s when the we grabbed our poles and got going. By the around 6pm we had caught a number of northern, smallmouth (my son caught a 3lb on the topwater), and a couple of more walleye. We kept four for dinner. We didn’t realize that this would be the best/only fish dinner of the trip.
