We fished our way back south on Rostul and took time to stop and visit a sand beach on the east side of the lake. It appeared there was an old fire ring sitting under water. There was also an old campsite on top of the point northwest of the sand beach. It was a great site, but we couldn’t find a tent pad as it was invaded with prickly Canadian bushes, as Jenny nicknamed them. While trolling to the creek leaving Rostul, we managed to catch two Northerns. We had a hard time finding the creek that empties into the lake on the southwest corner, but once we found it we were able to easily navigate it to the portage that led into Cyclops lake. We did chase up two big flocks of geese on this creek, which definitely got Decoy very excited! We looked for a place to have lunch on Cyclops, but did not find any campsites, so we paddled on to the end of the lake where we had great difficulty finding the portage. The beavers had been working in a patch of aspen and birch, so it appeared as though several trails had been cut for the portage. After two attempts, we finally found the portage at the base of the cliff, which runs along the north edge of Cyclops. This portage is 600m long and has some steep bare rock climbs followed by a significant portion of bog that is covered by corduroy. We celebrated at the end of the portage by having lunch and a shot of Vincent VanGogh espresso vodka after our challenging portage.

Our outfitter had told us there were lots of walleyes on Haven, so we trolled our way to a campsite. It was a nice site with a good landing, a bench to sit on, and fabulous fishing right by our site. We had walleye for dinner and enjoyed a nice campfire. We pondered taking a layover day the next day, but after looking at the map we decided to push hard the next day to make the end of our trip a little bit easier. The evening of Day 3 was the peak of the meteor shower, but we did not see any meteors.  People count: 0.
