Day 3 of 10
Sunday, June 02, 2013 Because we wanted an early start the next day, Barry Giles was kind enough to get us some bacon, eggs and bread so we could cook for ourselves in the cabin rather than wait for his cooks to come to work. During the night the wind kept howling and I awoke often to the sound of the wind. We were up at four and on our way by about 5:30. Amazingly we found ourselves trailing a pick-up from Indiana on the road to Stanton Bay. Barry though he knew who it was because another outfitter had called the day before to ask about the road conditions on the way to Stanton Bay. We all got a chuckle when the (very slow) driver stopped on a bridge so they could admire a stream flowing through.“Lots of water ahead guys…let’s move.” The wind had died down some during the night And the sky was beautiful. We arrived right behind Indiana at the parking lot but they had lots of stuff to move so they let us play through. Nice guys, heading down to Rawn Narrows for the week. Note: If you have been reluctant to try a trip to the BWCA or Quetico because you don’t have the best equipment or don’t know how to make it happen, then you are on the right site. Ask for help discovering a reasonable trip plan and put it on your schedule. Just get it done the best way you can right now. Don’t sacrifice the good for the prefect. We hurried (as much as one can) to get down the trail to the EP. It was just as we were about to start out on the bay that I realized I had left my sunglasses in Sam’s Suburban back at Camp Q. I did have my hat but I really would miss my sunglasses. I had discovered the day before that my camera battery was dead so I had to squint to see what I would not be photographing. All the photographs here are courtesy of Sam. Once we stopped to adjust our trim (learned that lesson the hard way once) we headed out onto Pickerel and discovered that yesterdays wind was still a stiff breeze. Not too bad for us as we were quartering with the wind. Just little caps to make things interesting and a bit more work. Our course took us through Dore and down the Deaux Riveres to Sturgeon. The water was up on the Deaux and that would be a theme for the duration. We had a nice tail wind down Sturgeon and into the narrows. Cliffs guard the entrance to the narrows at the southwest corner of the lake. It was really cool surfing through on the waves into the narrows. Getting up the river into Russell was a challenge in the high water but Don and I made it by portaging around the last bit of fast water running out of Russell. Sam and Tim lined the last bit into Russell. I had it in mind to take the campsite right across from Chatterton Falls but we were all pretty tired so we made camp on and island along the way. Nice spot with a breeze so it was a good choice.
