The writing style, the attitude, I don't know. I don't mean to offend anyone here by saying that. It's just my little opinion. I used to get aggravated, too, but I've since just realized that he has his style, as you have yours and I have mine. I do find it somewhat unfortunate that he degrades clients at times. But it's his magazine and he can do whatever he wants! If I want to offer my opinions similarly, I'll start publishing my own. I will always remain a BWJ subscriber because it's a great resource and pleasant read. The winter issue always gets me geeked up for the first trip of the season. Mike |

quote MikeinMpls: "Just BWJ. I like to read Stu's quarterly rant on "real food" and why he won't get his feet wet. I think he and Cliff J should share a tent for a few days..... :-) or as they say 'whatever floats your boat" my summer issue of BWJ came the other day...going 'up north' next week and saving it for the hammock.... dr bob |

What, doesn't everyone agree that canoe tripping "at the highest level" requires 14 pounds of ice? I do, though, eagerly await my quarterly edition of the BWJ, including "Stu's rants." I've subscribed to Backpacker for 20 years, but renew my subscription now mainly out of inertia. It's too focused on too-cute flow charts and giving the quick "beta." I miss the long-form articles from the time John Viehman edited the magazine. I recently let my Outside magazine subscription lapse. It has excellent articles on the outdoors, interspersed with articles on why you really need to drink your Scotch our of this $150 glass. |

I do love that magazine in spite of that. I will likely renew my subscription soon. I'm also considering Canoeroots after hearing what you all have to say. And maybe Backpacker. A friend has that mag and I kind of like it. |

I know Cliff, tripped with him.... his opinions vs. Stu's opinions? Let's say that I wouldn't have to bring any fire starting materials! When I read Stu's articles I just chuckle a bit. It is, truly, a matter of "whatever floats your canoe." I say: if you are willing to carry it in, and it's legal, go for it! That goes for two seven-pound blocks of frozen water. Mike |

Field and Stream. Mostly because I think I have a man crush on Bill Heavey. His books are great. Lol. I'll pickup Canoeroots fairly regularly. Used to like canoe and kayak but they've gotten away from topics that interest me. Same with backpacker. |

quote Jackfish: "BWJ and Canoeroots. I also get email updates from Canoeroots. I enjoy both magazines." That's my only two now, that and my complimentary AARP rag. I was a long time subscriber of "Canoe," later renamed "Canoe and Kayak." But when they ditched the magazine for SUP, I ditched them! |

I've never heard of Canoeroots before. I may have to give it a try. Canoe & Kayak never interested me. Too much about areas and things that don't interest me. |

Heheheh, I've gotten aggravated at his attitude at times, but love the magazine. I've just learned to skim the things he's written. There was a time I dreamed of doing one of those Sutton River trips, but since I don't "Count" every fish I catch and take fishing so seriously, I'd be one of those unfortunate folks that he berated with his pen! Canoeroots is my favorite, though. I wish I'd had more time paddling and less time reading this trip! |
