I don't really subscribe to magazines anymore. I am a member of the National Audubon Society so I get their magazine 4 times a year. I usually pick up a BWJ when I find one at a store. I'll do the same thing with a Backpacker or Outside magazine if it has anything interesting, such as canoeing, in it. I occasionally get Backwoodsman or American Frontiersman too. Sometimes they have some cool articles and include articles on making a canoe or something like that. As a birder I also pick up Birdwatcher's Digest whenever I find one. My favorite one is probably the Backwoodsman.

Household subscriptions include but not limited to, BWJ, Backpacker, Dirt Rag, Budget Traveler, Food & Wine, Wine Spectator, Guitar, and some yoga magazine. When listed out seems a little excessive. But nice to have when traveling into BWCA, across the state, country, or ocean. On the up side, we don't store them. Magazines are offered to other travelers or donated to our local library. Favorites are BWJ, Backpacker, & Dirt Rag.

BWJ and Canoeroots. I also get email updates from Canoeroots. I enjoy both magazines.

I forgot about Dirt Rag. I don't really do any Mtn. biking so I lost interest but it's a fun magazine anyway.

The only magazines that we get are Scouting & Boy's Life. Both occasionally have canoeing stories in them. Earlier this year was an article about canoe tripping inside Yellowstone which I think would be awesome to do someday.

If you live in the Midwest check out Silent Sports Magazine... Monthly..... Sometimes mentions new areas to check out as we did this spring... McKeever Cabin on Mckeever Lake in the Michigan UP.... Darren Bush the Canoecopia Guru often has articles in it.

That's my only two now, that and my complimentary AARP rag. I was a long time subscriber of "Canoe," later renamed "Canoe and Kayak." But when they ditched the magazine for SUP, I ditched them!

I think he and Cliff J should share a tent for a few days.....

my summer issue of BWJ came the other day...going 'up north' next week and saving it for the hammock....

Wouldn't that be a hoot. I know Cliff, tripped with him.... his opinions vs. Stu's opinions? Let's say that I wouldn't have to bring any fire starting materials!
When I read Stu's articles I just chuckle a bit. It is, truly, a matter of "whatever floats your canoe." I say: if you are willing to carry it in, and it's legal, go for it! That goes for two seven-pound blocks of frozen water.

I did indeed rock down to Electric Avenue, but I did not take it higher. I regret that.

What, doesn't everyone agree that canoe tripping "at the highest level" requires 14 pounds of ice?
I do, though, eagerly await my quarterly edition of the BWJ, including "Stu's rants."
I've subscribed to Backpacker for 20 years, but renew my subscription now mainly out of inertia. It's too focused on too-cute flow charts and giving the quick "beta." I miss the long-form articles from the time John Viehman edited the magazine.
I recently let my Outside magazine subscription lapse. It has excellent articles on the outdoors, interspersed with articles on why you really need to drink your Scotch our of this $150 glass.

BWJ of course. Even though I don't trip at the highest level. I do bring steaks and fresh eggs and potatoes though. Maybe I'm getting there.
Field and Stream. Mostly because I think I have a man crush on Bill Heavey. His books are great. Lol.
I'll pickup Canoeroots fairly regularly.
Used to like canoe and kayak but they've gotten away from topics that interest me.
Same with backpacker.

You guys have given me some great ideas. I'm an on again -off again subscriber of BWJ. But honestly, I'm a little put off by Stu's writing. The writing style, the attitude, I don't know. I don't mean to offend anyone here by saying that. It's just my little opinion.
I do love that magazine in spite of that. I will likely renew my subscription soon. I'm also considering Canoeroots after hearing what you all have to say. And maybe Backpacker. A friend has that mag and I kind of like it.

Heheheh, I've gotten aggravated at his attitude at times, but love the magazine. I've just learned to skim the things he's written. There was a time I dreamed of doing one of those Sutton River trips, but since I don't "Count" every fish I catch and take fishing so seriously, I'd be one of those unfortunate folks that he berated with his pen!
Canoeroots is my favorite, though. I wish I'd had more time paddling and less time reading this trip!

I used to get aggravated, too, but I've since just realized that he has his style, as you have yours and I have mine. I do find it somewhat unfortunate that he degrades clients at times.
But it's his magazine and he can do whatever he wants! If I want to offer my opinions similarly, I'll start publishing my own.
I will always remain a BWJ subscriber because it's a great resource and pleasant read. The winter issue always gets me geeked up for the first trip of the season.

I'm a charter subscriber of BWJ, it's the only magazine I get. I've read every issue cover to cover. I'd never part with them - my wife can deal with them after I'm dead. LOL Simply because the publisher might have opinions I might not agree with is of no consequence to me.
I've never heard of Canoeroots before. I may have to give it a try.
Canoe & Kayak never interested me. Too much about areas and things that don't interest me.
