Adventure in Quetico

Today we start off with the Yum Yum portage. We chose that route simply because many people advised us not to do the portage as it was hard. This made us want to do it all the more :) It is a big climb and some sharp drops along the way. Here is a view looking down to see how high it climbs.
We had a nice dry day, I'd think this portage would be difficult when wet and slippery.
We finally run into another group they are just behind us on the Grey Lake to the pond between Grey and Shade so we make quick work of the portage to stay out of their way. We get loaded up move about 200-300 yards down the shoreline and see a well defined portage trail. It doesn't look like it heads directly to Shade but my maps only show one portage in this area so it has to be the right one. We unload and start heading up a steap hill over a pretty rough portage, but it has been cleared recently so has to be right. By now I am having my doubts I don't have my compass out, but it feels like we are doing a circle, all of a sudden we run into the group who was behind us on the last portage from Grey Lake to the pond. We just did the same portage twice. There were two separate portage landings about 200-300 yards apart going from the pond to Grey lake---then you hit a marshy area with trails in all different directions. I should have listened to my instincts instead of totally relying on the map. I guess we got a little extra exercise :) Needless to say the other group looked surprised so see us behind them on the portage.
We get going again and head to Shade Lake. Now we really start running into people. We work our way through a series of short portages to North BAy. With all of the people we are seeing I am wondering if many of the camps are taken? Fortunately for us North Bay was completely empty as far as we could see. We chose a nice Island in the middle of the Bay for our last camp. It was a very nice camp, but has been severly mistreated. Previous groups did not seem to know proper sanitation methods once you got back into the woods. The camp still was nice.
The camp had a nice beach landing.
Enjoying our last campfire while a thunderstorm rages.
Sara heads to bed, while I sit by the fire and listen to the Twins win another game.
