Thursday July 2. Up and had a quick breakfast and camp broke by 10 am. Started paddling for the Carp-Birch portage. We will try to find a site near the portage into Polaris. We stopped at this portage on the way in and found it to be a very steep but short carry. When we got to the Carp-Birch portage we talked to a father son group from N.J. about the wind on Sun.-Mon. and they said that they were talking to a person that had been guiding for several years and had never seen that force of wind last that long. I found everyone on this trip to be very friendly. Our first choice of sites on Birch was taken, too bad it looked very nice. Paddled another 15 minute and found another nice site and set up camp for the next 2 days. The area looked good for smallmouths and we started trying right away. Yep, we were right good fishing. Had dinner of beef enchiladas, fettuccini Alfredo and apple dlite. After a dip in the lake and dusk we were going to start fire but the skeeters were out very heavy and so we went to the tent.
