Sleep in again—this is turning into a very leisurely trip which is okay by me. Enjoy Home made Cinamin fry bread with icing for breakfast. Pack up camp and troll our way to the Conmee portage. The fishing slows us down but it is a good diversion. The Conmee portage is not too rough, but my map says it is 150 rods, it felt more like 200-220 to me. We paddle across Conmee and this lake is empty too. I troll Conmee to no avail. We do the short portage into Suzanette and find that lake deserted as well. I am really liking the privacy we encounter on this trip so far. We choose the message cache cliff site. It has a very poor landing a it is steep to bring the gear up, but the view is worth it. It is just the right size for a small group like my wife and I.
Head out for some fishing and while trolling I get a nice bite, by the time I pick up the pole the fish is off. I look up and notice Sara’s pole bent all the way down to the water. Sara only fishes for the one week we go to Quetico each year---she completely forgot how to use a spinning reel. She grabs it and starts reeling it upside down and backwards—almost completely unscrewing the hand crank—I have visions of her losing the crank into the lake and us having to bring the beast in by hand, but Sara recovers her senses and brings in a nice 8-10# trout.
We catch some more nice trout, until I hook into this brute and fight him for about 15-20’. He was sittng in about 30’ of water. Man this cold weather up north has really made the fish act differently. He is released to fight another day.
We head back to camp catching a few more fish. Sara makes some Tortellini with peas, sausage, mushrooms---delicious. We enjoy a nice campfire with a view.
