"How It All Began" (1971 Namakan River Loop from Crane Lake)
by Spartan2
Morning COLD and damp! Neil’s air mattress won’t hold air. Lynda has blistered ears. Left camp 7:30 A. M. and ran Quetico Rapids, arrived High Falls 7:50. [I loved High Falls!]
Portaged Hay Rapids at 9:00. Rain starting. (Long and very muddy portage.) Neil saw a rabbit.
Ran Lady Rapids at 10 A. M. Very exciting! Sun coming out but brisk breeze against us. Saw crows and ducks.
11:30 lunch at island in Namakan Lake. Cloudy and cool, with wet clothes from Lady Rapids. Namakan Lake very choppy. Met a 6-canoe party on the lake and they asked us, “Which way to the rapids?” They had already dumped one canoe.
Had a snack break at Namakan Narrows Lodge. This was LLC’s [Spartan2’s] favorite spot, closely followed by Myrtle Falls. Lovely, sunny, and still going through the narrows. Lots of fishermen from the area resorts.
I couldn't take this picture, so I bought a post card later.
Very choppy on Sand Point Lake. Stopped and explored Burnt Island (all one big boulder, from the looks) but decided not to camp there: too “civilized”. Camped on a fishhook point after LLC got tired out. 4:00. Nice campsite.
