Scouting the Wisconsin/Michigan Border
by spankatolla
Got up and made coffee, Alex and Carmen still sleeping. So I headed up the Brule River, making it approximately 4 miles before turning around. Didn’t quite make it to the Brule Lake dam, but what a beautiful river. Was shallow in a few spots, but I just needed to kneel in the center of the canoe and tram it out. Made it back to camp to enjoy left over sausage gravy and grits. Went to Ottawa Lake CG to assess a potential evening sunset opportunity. Thumbs up for the evening sunset and on to Iron River for ice and then the first wilderness, Whisker Lake. Perch Lake, located just west of the wilderness, had five walk in sites. We hiked back to the first site and surveyed the area. Hiked back to the jeep and continued north along the west side of the wilderness, finding three parking lots but only two trails heading into the wilderness. The second and third parking lots had trails to the east with the latter being about a mile hike to Whisker Lake. Went all the way to the Brule River and turned around to find a branch had fallen over the road sometime after we passed. Luckily for us it was small enough I could drive over it. Next stop was the Headwater Wilderness. Found all three parking areas. Northern parking was to a creek. The second parking was to a hiking trail. The third (south side of the wilderness) had two parking areas, one right in front of Scott Lake. We walked down to Scott Lake and found a campsite in the woods and access to the lake. As we made our way to Hagemen Lake parking lot, there were no trails other than a faint deer trail through the woods to a bog. As I looked across the bog I could see the lake and had I had my canoe with me and felt adventurous I would have continued. But I didn’t. Flies were beginning to pick up right here, so I headed back. Both lakes show good potential for a future trip. We headed back to camp and as we were heading east on highway 70 I noticed a sign to Anvil Lake CG. I remembered that Anvil Lake was on the southeast corner of the Blackjack Wilderness and also we were on 70 just a day ago and had to go right pass this area. Made it back to camp got the fire built while Carmen made spaghetti for dinner. Started braking down camp a little and then headed back to Ottawa Lake to watch the sunset. Sunset was wonderful, as usual and made it back to camp for a fire and cherry pie dies.
