Day 4 of 8
Thursday, September 06, 2012 I was in no hurry this morning. It was a nice day and I only planned to paddle up the Tuck River to Robinson. Late in the morning I pushed off. I crossed the open part of Moose Bay to find the river channel… but there was no river channel. The Canoe Country drought that began in early July, after some hard June rains, had mucked things up. After slogging in hummocks for a couple of hours, I decided to turn around, head out of Moose Bay to take the 127 rod portage opposite Table Rock that leads right into Robinson. I was licking my chops while I headed towards the five-star campsite on the west side of Robinson but… darn! it was occupied! So, I headed up to the almost equally rated camp on the island opposite Gardner’s Mountain. It was free. Past occupants had really spent time building the fireplace, the pile of rocks was three feet high but those rocks were precariously piled. I got in late after futilely battling the Tuck “River” hummocks and taking a seven mile and one portage detour to get in this camp. After eating dinner I turned in with a very tired body… again.
