Day 6 of 14
Sunday, June 16, 2013 It rained some last night, wind picked back up this morning, so I slept in until 8:00. Feels like a change in weather is coming.
I headed up to the little bay north of here, where a mammoth pike, at least 35”, took my best hard lure (JSR-07). I was standing on a rock next to a cliff. I thought he was played out and got him up on the rock at my feet. Bending over required that I move my feet, and when I did, the monster flipped, did a 180, and broke the 10 lb. line. His head was easily as big as my thigh and as long as my leg. Biggest northern pike I’ve almost caught. I hope the lure falls out. I also caught a nice trout, and a few smallish bass.
The wind picked up like clockwork at 11:30, so I headed back to camp to be totally safe. The clouds are looking ominous, so I put all my gear under the tarp. Sure enough, some heavy weather hit in the afternoon. The tarp held through the ferocious wind. Then came a lull, but by 6:00, the rain was back as a constant heavy downpour, so I retired to the tent until morning, getting some serious reading done. I think the site gets a ½ star deduct for lack of protection from wind, and another ½ star deduct for poor tent pads. Creaking trees upwind from my tent kept me awake for much of the night.
