July 25 – Falls into Kawnipi - We had oatmeal for breakfast. The camp was not the best, but we did hear a beaver splash a couple of times that night. The Falls chain was difficult, but beautiful. I was glad I asked the scout leader for advice. We took our time and made it through without mishap. We did learn NOT to try and paddle perpendicular to a strong current. We stopped at Canyon and enjoyed the fall from the rock over looking the canyon. The portage by Canyon is a hard one, not long, but steep and rocky down to the put-in. The water levels were up on our whole trip and the exit currents on the falls were strong and long. Once through the falls we had a long paddle into Kawnipi. We were racing the weather, some distant thunder/lightening, and made camp in/near McKenzie Bay. J looked at his watch as we landed and it was 4:12. He told me he had the canoe and for me to get a tarp up. At 4:22 we were huddled under the tarp for 30 minutes for rain, hail, and wind. The storm blew over and were had our best supper consisting of Backpacker’s Pantry Katmandu Curry and pork ramen with freeze dried corn. I highly recommend the Katmandu Curry and pork ramen. The evening calmed down to the point that we decided to stay two nights and fish the next day. We very much wanted a meal of walleye. We were also blessed with a fine rainbow. That night a new storm moved and the rain and wind kicked up all night as the temp dropped. We did learn that I like small lakes, while J likes big lakes.
