Ottertrack to Basswood The NE winds continued all night and into mid-day. Stocking cap type of morning, but with the north arm of knife ahead of us, we had a solid tail wind the entire way and even into Birch and Sucker. The winds basically died by the time we reached Prairie Portage. We made lunch on the other side, and hit Basswood about 2:30. Crossing the big waters of Basswood would have been a nightmare with any wind, but we had glass. Unreal. Warm, calm, sunny, and we made great time crossing. Our goal had been Washington Island by day’s end, but we had great conditions and elected to go for United States Point. Rounded the top, and took the second site (the first was taken). Our reward was a perfect 40 yard sand beach and a flat, dry tent pad. We had dinner on the beach after a swim. Not a cloud in the sky. Great day and great evening without the moon to enjoy the stars for the first time on the trip.
