Quetico Solo w dog McIntyre Woodside and Sunday Lakes
by TomT
We both got up early as we planned to travel today in opposite directions to continue our trips. Rich is a very generous fellow and turned me on to his “Ova Easy” powdered eggs and some pre cooked bacon. Wow, that was good! That’s going in my pack for sure next time. I usually just do different versions of oatmeal with dried fruit and a trail bar on my solos. Rich travels in style complete with a director’s chair for tending his fires. It helps that his Placid Boatworks “Rapid Fire” solo canoe weighs in at 29 lbs.
We said our goodbyes then I headed north to Reid Lake then a series of short, very rocky portages on my way south to Silence Lake. The rocks and especially the difficult shallow landings really took their toll on both of us. Me and Luna both agreed to never travel through here again. Once is enough. The boulder hopping with heavy packs and canoe was a bit much for me. Gotta get me one of those 29 pounders for next time. This area is very pretty and has a wild feeling to it. Off the beaten trail for sure.
We stopped at a site on an unnamed lake for lunch.
It rained lightly off and on today in a thick overcast. I had a tailwind on Silence which I was really thankful for but the skies opened up pretty good here. It stopped by the time I arrived at a nice site by the Agnes Lake portage. I set up camp with more dark clouds off to the northwest. Perfect place to pitch the tarp over the fire pit and a nice level tent pad back in the pines. There’s an open area for frisbee with Luna too. That’s all she really cares about.
I made freeze dried pepper steak for dinner and mixed in some of the beef chunks with Luna’s food. I realized I’m very close to running out of dog food and from now on I will share my food with her.
Tonight a cold front moves in and the weather radio says low 30’s. I’m gonna layer up and hope for the best. I make a nice pad for Luna to lay on in the tent. I lay out my seat back canoe chair and cover it with a small fleece blanket. I also use the dirty clothes bag that she can lay on. If the ground is padded and warm she will be fine.
