Honoring Memories and Traditions
by Spartan2
This wasn't really an ending, but another nod to tradition. Not one going back to 2007, but nevertheless, one that is very precious to us.
Naniboujou Lodge is, perhaps, my favorite place in all the world. It may rank up there almost as high for Anna, as well. It is a historic lodge on the Lake Superior shore near Hovland, Minnesota, with a 220-ton stone fireplace, unique Cree Indian paintings in the dining room, and an ambiance that is just like stepping back into history. We have stayed there with Anna several times, and we have also visited for dinner or for afternoon tea when we were unable to get room reservations.
This year I called early and was able to reserve two small adjoining rooms for the two weekend nights after we checked out of the cabin. It is the first time I have done this, and to say Anna was pleased is an understatement of major proportions.
What is the pull of Naniboujou? Well, for one thing--ROCKS! Lake Superior rocks!
We sit in the chairs along the shore and she brings the rocks to us to admire. For hours. It is hard to describe how much she enjoys this.
This was interspersed with lunch, then checking in to the hotel so we could move into our rooms, then more rock hunting, then cleaning up for "high tea" in the solarium.
Then there was more rock hunting until time for dinner. Dinner at Naniboujou is a lovely experience; good food, a beautiful atmosphere, and quiet music. Did I mention stepping back into history? There is no wi-fi here, no AC, telephone, or TV in the room. After dinner we played a game of Five Crowns in the Solarium and retired early. By then it was raining lightly, and it rained most of the night.
