Sunday:

This day dawned with a constant drizzle and heavy gloom. We went to the fabulous Sunday brunch in the dining room and feasted on cedar planked salmon, coffee cake, wild rice blueberry sausage, bread pudding, scrambled eggs with cream cheese, and applewood smoked bacon, among other delectable goodies. Anna still had to cap this off with Naniboujou's famous plate-size cinnamon roll, so we were stuffed by the time we left the table!

We decided to drive up to Grand Portage, as we had never been there, and it didn't look like a great day for running into the Lake Superior surf all day searching for more rocks. The drive was foggy, and the drizzle hadn't abated when we arrived at the National Monument and Heritage Center.

This is a really interesting site and I truly wish we had had more time to explore there. We listened to a short presentation, toured some of the stockade, and if my energy level had allowed, we would have done more. But I was trying very hard to save stamina to make the 1-mile hike (a half-mile each way on a flat paved trail) at Grand Portage State Park that is the access to High Falls.

So we headed off to the Casino for a quick and uninspiring lunch, and then with our rain gear on and our positive attitudes in place, we started off to find High Falls on the Pigeon River, the highest waterfall in Minnesota.

It was worth the hike! We photographed the falls from every angle, photographed each other from the different vantage points, and had a good time seeing all of the possible views. There was never more than a light drizzle, and it was a good ending to our Grand Portage adventure! Something new after all of the traditions!

Just a couple of Anna's photos at the waterfall:

Naniboujou doesn't serve dinner on Sunday evening, so we went in to Grand Marais and dined at the Crooked Spoon. When we finally came home it was nearly dark, but the "rock girl" still had to run out to the surf one last time to see if she could see anything at all!
