Day 7 of 9
Thursday, June 15, 2006. Mostly sunny with temps in the upper 70s.

The morning was still and offered perfect conditions to try some top water action. After breakfast Mike and I headed up the east shore of the lake, throwing top water baits at its rocks and downed timber. We picked up a number of little smallmouth, nothing to brag about. Barley and Moose Plums headed down the east shore. We decided to retreat back towards camp and fish the islands and rock piles available there. As we came around the corner of the island, we spotted Matt and Zach. They were sitting on a meat hole. We moved closer and watched as they pulled up one walleye after another, doubling up 7 times. We followed their lead, but couldn’t match their action. We did manage to scrape together 4 fish for the stringer. Eventually the hot bite cooled, even for Matt and Zach. We headed back to camp and had a shore lunch of walleye with wild rice.

Later that afternoon, Mike and I decided to try fishing above the rapids near the Maligne Portage. This turned out to be a good choice. On our first pass I landed a 17” smallmouth. We found some slack water and began casting out into the current. I boated a walleye, then another. They were in there. Soon Barley and Moose Plums appeared. Barley pulled a 21” smallmouth out from behind a big rock next to shore with a top water bait. Nice fish! As we began heading back to camp, Mike tied into a chunky 6 pound pike. A good ending to a great afternoon of fishing.
