Day 26 of 28
Tuesday, July 17, 2018 - 6th Day of the drive home – Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota
While we did not see any rams in Alaska, we did see a bunch of them in South Dakota on the way to Mount Rushmore.
While on top of Mount Rushmore we were taking a tour with a group of maybe 50 people when a nasty storm started to roll upon the mountain. When there was a lightning strike roughly 100 yards away from us, we opted to leave the tour and double-time it back to the car. As we were exiting the park, the loud speaker system was warning of golf ball sized hail due to hit the park in a few minutes. We made it about five minutes down the mountain when the storm, rain, and hail hit. It was coming down really hard and cars were just about all pulled-off on the side of the road with their flashers going. This was great as it left us a clear path to get off of the mountain quickly and we managed to not get hit with any of the big hail.
We made it to Pipestone Minnesota and slept there for the evening.
