1980, Return to the Namakan: Going Back in Time #5
by Spartan2
Sunrise on Namakan Lake, 5:45 AM.
Best laid plans!
We piled out at 5 AM and broke camp on a cold breakfast to take advantage of the "morning calm". But there wasn't any! We had a strong east wind on Namakan Lake and we just flew across! Too smoky for a good photo.
Thought we'd stop at Namakan Narrows Lodge for a cup of coffee like did in '71, but it is all closed up. Looked for pictographs in the narrows but no luck finding them. As we came out into Sand Point Lake it was thundering and the wind was horrendous! We pitched emergency camp on a little island on the sheltered side, in the rain, about 8:30. We are currently "wind bound", though the sun has come out again. Finally have gotten dried off and warmed up, but this isn't a great way to end such a terrific trip! I know Neil needs more to eat and I am getting worried.
Just before we reached here we saw four otters playing in the water. I love otters.
There was a hot sun all afternoon. We were stranded by the wind since 8:30 and it is nearly 6 PM! Wow! Perhaps the wind will die down by morning. We can hope.
