GoCobbers95: "My portage yolk will also be arriving today. Am I crazy enough to walk around the neighborhood with a canoe on my head for the sake of conditioning?!?" I've done this. I figure it is good entertainment for the neighbors. My teenage son hasn't been brave enough to portage around the block, he is always shy about anyone "staring" at him. But he does laps around our large yard and he does "step up, step downs" using the deck while carrying the canoe. I took some video of him the other day. |

I needed to test the new foam seat that I ordered from NorthStar to see how it performs in my Hornbeck Lost Pond before I glue it in permanently. I need to do a test of putting some different packs into the boat. I want to try my hiking pack in the bow to see if it fits the profile of the boat better than what I am currently using. |

And yes I get out about twice a week, weather permitting. Work is slow so I also get out hiking about every other day. |

boonie: "I might have bought that Slipper if it wasn't so far away. " Yes, that would have been quite the drive. Jim was kind enough to meet me halfway between the Twin Cities and Madison. |

Looks like my 55L Earth-Pak plus a small daypack will be plenty of space for my gear. I have planned things out to travel quite light. I took it all out for a paddle and the canoe (Mad River Slipper) felt great. Another fairly windy day, but it handled well. I discovered that I like to switch my body position a lot. I spent half the time kneeling. Half the time sitting. About half the time with a single blade and about half the time with kayak paddle. I think this is mostly because I am not conditioned yet and it feels good to change positions and muscles being used. I discovered that the front thwart is perfect for me to use as a foot brace when I am seated. Anybody else getting out and waking up those paddling muscles? |

Lol, that’s awesome! I got lots of funny looks when I was training for the Ely Canoe Portage Marathon last year. I even ran into a lady and her husband who asked if I was training for the Ely Marathon. I portage canoes around my neighborhood pretty frequently (there are some waterways within portage distance) though, so the funny looks are becoming more and more of a rarity. Makes for great conversation with people you run into though. Tell your son to keep up the good work! Tony |
