mirth: "My two wood trimmed boats hang in the garage above the door. I have a two car garage and one half of the garage is enough space to hang two and just clear the door. I like the idea of a rack but that would require an amount of re-engineering our garage that I don't think I have the time, energy, or finances to tackle.

I currently have two additional boats stored outdoors.... A Lincoln that's almost as old as me is on horses, and a Phoenix Poke Boat that is awaiting repair/refurbishment to return it to the water. I'm also lucky that I have access to a canoe trailer with openings at our Scout garage, and have a couple boats there for winter.

We're planning on redoing our fence next year. As part of this I may have the fence guys convert a dog run on the side of our house to outdoor boat storage. It's 20' long. Maybe I can fit 3-4 boats there...."

I've thought about building a storage bunker next to the back of the house, to store the boat. I'd make it big enough to store two solos up to 14' long, as I'm expecting my wife to get her boat next year at some point.

Thanks for all the inspiration paddlers. Just hung my boat and tied it down for the season - before I could even get it in the water. Expecting some heavy historic December storms tonight, and I needed to get the car in the garage. Kinda glad the weather threat kicked my ass to get this done. LOL

It's kinda tricky to get this beast up there, but I'm sure I'll get better at it the more I do it.

Oh my goodness, you all with canoes in your houses make me so jealous! We'd never be able to get one in the door and maneuvered around corners to a place we could hang it. Lucky, lucky! We go out to our tiny garage to admire ours

We used L brackets with a 2x4 on top and a diagonal brace off to the side

2x4 in the corner of garage with blocks on top to guide the stem of bow into the corner of the garage; other end is suspended by chain

very easy to carry the canoe on my shoulders and stick the bow up on the 2x4 and lower the stern to the floor; the walk to the stern, lift it and chain it up until its next use

I devised this simple process after our canoe spent last winter in the basement being refurbished and resting on sawhorses.

I raised it myself with two large S-biners and rope and then added more support in the middle and ends.

A flat bottom canoe on top of a couple of giant suitcases next to a couch can serve as a coffee table. That is, of course, if the couch is not covered with sleeping bags and tents. A walk-in basement is nice for canoe storage.

No, I am married. But we have the living room we use, the spare living room and the finished living room space in the basement that you see. Even though part of the basement is finished it gets used as storage space. Maybe it is time to down size, but thosed smaller places often don't come with canoe storage spaces.

She's a beauty for sure. I'd be itching to get her on the water.

Hey Scoobs,

That Swift is a Beauty!
Getting the boats up high can be tricky. It helps to be tall and have a light boat. The top one in my photo, a Hornbeck Lost Pond 10 is only about 16 pounds. I literally throw it up there. The next one down, a Souris River Tranquility, is about 32 lbs. and goes up at about a foot above shoulder height. The lower ones I wrestle into place.
Down here we don't have a "season" so I keep them ready to go at all times.

I've found a step stool can be handy for getting to the top bunks on the canoe trailer. I suspect you might find a use for it too.

Batten down the hatches for tonight! Hope my Lincoln survives the wind, it's on the lee side of the house.

In a garage, a rack attached to the wall can cause a population explosion!
I promised my wife that I wouldn't have more canoes than the rack would accommodate. I guess that I'll just have to add another set of arms if I get another boat...

Not the best photo but you get the idea. Ben hangin her like this since I bought her in 2000. Bungee rat nests are the worst next to one on your fishing reel."

I like your method because it requires only one person to hoist the boat. My setup needs 2 people.

I hang my canoe in the garage using home-made slings.

I use a system in my garage similar to Ausables. Mine utilizes ratchet-ropes that I purchased either at Home Depot or Amazon. I can easily hang it myself. I store the paddles across the thwarts and my PFD's lay on the seats while it's upside down in the cradle. I'm lucky enough to have high ceilings in my garage so there is room above the garage doors. I have a Kayak or two up there as well.

This might be my best option - as it might not fit in our garage. I'm hoping for the garage - will be giving it a shot tomorrow. If not, I'll have to hang it under the deck, and tie it down.

We have a walk-in/out basement. The basement was finished last winter, or I'd just walk it an, and store it right in the middle of everything.

We do have a spot where I could plop the canoe, but with the kiddos needing a place to play in the winter, not really liking the idea of a bunch of 8-12 year old kids crashing around the boat.

Being that I now have my new boat, I'm trying to think of how to store this beast, with bringing into the basement. Yes. I can actually do it. And that would have been a legit option had we not finished the basement last March.

So now it's either in the garage on a rack, or out back on a rack. I need some inspiration. Please show me what you have, and where you store your boat.

Thanks for the help...

Couple canoes in the garage on homemade brackets made out of 2x4’s and plywood.

And…. The latest edition safely tucked away for the winter in the family room.

All my boats are stored in our barn. It's dry and all the canoes are kept out of the weather and away from the sun. So far, it's a wonderful system and they all seem to be living happily ever after.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

Man, a shed or barn would be so awesome! Well done.
This crappy piece of urban property won't allow for much. Some day maybe when I retire to a different location.

The hardest part is to sneak the stern in behind the garage door bracket. As for lifting the boat over my head, not an issue. Just can't really see what I'm doing - because it blocks my view. LOL

I had a stepstool to help get me up there to finesse the position of the boat. I didn't use it until I got the bow up over the back rack.

But now that the boat is up on the garage rack, I finally feel like the purchase is complete. :)

I think you're fine with those boats protected from UV under the deck. The only concern might be those covers retaining some moisture and damaging any wood. Just a thought passed on to me by another.

Here’s a thread with some ideas for some simple brackets.

I had a couple of canoes stores under a deck with those covers for a few years of Ely weather. They did fine. The only wood was the seats.

I have the same home-made set up. I have a 12 ft. ceiling in the garage so both canoes hang well above the garage door.
