My thought was that I'd create a map in google maps and use my phone for navigation when I go in august (with a physical map and compass too, of course). Initially I started marking the portages and such on my route manually but Im hoping someone out there has potentially already created a google map with the sites and portages marked, or maybe mods know how to export all the markers on the interactive map to google. Any help is appreciated! Thanks Matty T |

MattyT: "Hi friends - does anyone know if there is a downloadable version of the bwca interactive map out there, or a way to download the portages and campsites/points of interest to overlay on google maps or something like that? FYI, I recently did some bushwhacking by Boze lake and intended to use my Google Maps off-line on my iPhone as GPS. It worked well several other times but when I needed it most there was some glitch with the GPS function that it couldn’t find my location. Of course there was no service where I was so impossible to search the web to find a solution to re-enable the GPS functionality until I got out. While in the bush I tried toggling the airplane mode off and on and also restart my phone, both to no avail. I had to resort to map, compass and dead reckoning - difficult while deep in spruce swamp! I don’t recall the exact solution I found once I got out and had service to Google it ( it involved toggling off and on a switch in location services or Google maps) but I recommend you search for the solution and make sure GPS on your phone is working before you push off and get in such a predicament yourself. geotramper: "Head over to the GPS forum -- that should give you all the info you need. There is a pinned post on where to find portage and campsite location files that you can download. These can be loaded into programs like Google Earth/Maps, CalTopo, and GPS devices or phones." Agreed |
