Thanks for the suggestions. My son and I had a great trip! The portage into Crab was long but totally doable. The beaver population must have done some overtime since the mid portage swamp required us to canoe across it. We stayed on Crab and the peninsula site on Cummings. Rain, wind and smoke kept us off the water most of Friday and Saturday, but we were able to make a campsite move early morning Saturday and get some fishing in on Saturday night. We enjoyed the Cummings peninsula site, but were sad to see many of the large pines had been cut down. Still some nice sized ones remaining and I would guess the blueberries enjoyed some extra sun, but I would have loved to see it in its prime. We were wondering if those trees were camper casualties or a safety issue and the removing potential dead falls by the forest service. Anyone have historical knowledge of that site?

Heading into Crab Lake with my son tomorrow. No real plan at this point, but have not been in this area before. Any hints / thoughts on sites or fishing? We will be traveling light and willing to move around. Thanks for any advice.

Campsite on the east end of the peninsula on Cummings is FANTASTIC.

I did a solo in that area last year. Had a great time! Spent a bunch of time in the smaller lakes to the west of Crab.

I’d make a side trip to Coxey Pond for some good bass action. If you’re looking for walleye head to Buck or western, or even Big Moose.

Possibility of some ideas here ( if you haven't seen it already?) Seeking September solitude

Take the portage to Neewin from Cummings for great pike action. The campsite there was destroyed by blowdowns so it'll just be a day trip
