I went on ebay to see if I could find some of them packets for you but none. That was a GREAT backpacking item for sure. I wrote a buddy of mine who works with the usda and mentioned this to him. He said that those foil packets of meat products are usually irradiated to make them safe when the process them. Food safety is nothing to take lightly, especially in the back country. Doing like you said would probably work, provided every step you took involved good sanitation practices, but it might be wiser to simply dehydrate and add water at camp. Not to mention, a lighter food pack. And if you don't have a dehydrator, it's a great justification to get one LOL. Would I do it? I don't know. Even though it goes against what is considered safe measures, I probably would give it a go if it were to be consumed withing the first few days provided I had at least some way to keep it cool. With the temps that have been up there lately, and just sitting in my food bag, probably not. For the past several years, I have been curing/smoking/pickling and fermenting my own meats. In fact, I have 3 slabs of bacon ready to hit the smoker in an hour. The things I have learned from a food safety standpoint really opened my eyes, things I never would have thought about. I love me some corned beef hash, that's for sure. I just don't want to see anyone become ill, know what I mean. I should do a quick google search and see if there are any other outfits out there that make a shelf stable pouch version of that stuff. I sure there are as its a great pack packing item. |

I'm going to have to admit that those hungry jack hash browns are kicking and have become the base for many a camp meal in the last year or so. Depending on the type of trip I've even opened the package and placed them in a vac sealed bag. |

They are so good that we use them all the time at home too. That Libby's Corned Beef Pouch/ Hash Brown idea is definitely going into my meal planning file! I am thinking of adding in some dehydrated onions and peppers as well. Sounds like it could make a nice dinner! |
