I've wanted to try this but haven't yet. How long would a small laker have to smoke?

its illegal to cut or remove live vegitation...balsam limbs, moss, etc.

Right you are kanoes, I will have to pack in/out my own moss."
What about using an old cheap tarp? Saw one used on the TV with a TeePee type setup wrapped loosely in the tarp. If you used dead branches it would conform to the BWCA rules if it was over the fire grate, right?
Sounds really tasty and makes me wish I was a better fisher."
That's a good idea, or a piece of canvas and get it wet over a wood frame.

no pics, we did it kinda spur of the moment. I will be sure to take some this spring. I think this year I will make a wood frame and cover it in moss.

Anyone tried it? We did last year and they turned out pretty good. We used Lakers, and a brine of lake water, wine, salt, and some herbs. Made the smoker out of rocks and balsam limbs. Used ceadar chips for the smoke.Going to make some improvements on the backwoods made smoker this year. Any ideas?

That's what we did, and even made some small planks about 1/2" thick to put the fish on. But it would not be hard to bring in a handful of hard wood chips, don't need much
