Wow PK, that is an outstanding report. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the rest of it.

What a nice read! Part 2 will have to wait, but I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for posting the picture of the olive jar. I had no idea they are so big. What is the story of Shan Walshe and that woman?
Boppa 08/28/2011 11:27AM
PineKnot,
A wonderful Part 1. I am hoping to get to Part 2 soon, as your report brings one along on the trip so nicely. Some great photo's, really enjoyed the Elephant.
Thanks,
Boppa

quote OneMatch: "...Question: Whenever I've posted a trip report, my pics come out as thumbnails. How do you post them in the sizes you have here?..."

I upload my photos to photobucket.com in an 800 X 600 format. As I write my report in microsoft word, I copy the direct link for each photo from photobucket into the word document, then copy the whole document into the trip report on bwca.com. Took some trial and error to get my first report with pictures to look right, but after that it's fairly straightforward. And I'm not a computer geek...more of a computer neophyte...

quote Banksiana: "...planted myself on the Shan Walshe campsite...(that big widow maker still looming above the tent pad? I first questioned setting my tent there some twenty years ago...)"

I think that widowmaker is still there, but if my memory serves, most of the upper portion has fallen over the years and what remains is leaning away from the tentpad...could be wrong, but if it were still there, I think I would have noticed and been real wary as well...

Great report. Ran the section from Baird to Suzanette last October- planted myself on the Shan Walshe campsite the October before (that big widow maker still looming above the tent pad? I first questioned setting my tent there some twenty years ago....) I enjoyed seeing and reseesing the sights. Thanks!

Great report, PineKnot! You are obviously one truly experienced camper/paddler. I love the pics and watching you use your gear.

I, too, immediately saw that "elephant".

Thanks and looking forward to part 2 as well.

Appreciate everyone's kind comments. Hope to have Part 2 posted this weekend. Our high school just started this week, and as a teacher, things have been quite busy...

TomT; I never made it to Ted after suffering through the Death March on a 90 degree windless day. Am planning to hit that area next summer. Also, you had asked about my food storage system. I use a couple of cube-shaped tupperware containers, several 18 oz peanut butter jars, and 2 loaf-sized containers for the bread and fresh eggs. I stash my food pack, have never hung and never had any problems...knock on wood.

Hey Pineknot, any idea when pt. 2 will be done? I was hoping to read it before I leave next week wed. I'm going in the same area. Was also wondering why you didn't attempt the bushwack from Ted to Robinson? Or did you?

Great stuff PineKnot! Did part of your Part I route in June; wish I was back up there right now. Can't wait for Part II. --Goose

Excellent report of an amazing solo trip. I am hoping part two will report days with the wind at your back. It always blows in my face too. I have mucho respect for you and others who take on these long solos. I am gaining confidence in my ability to solo, and reports like this really encourage me to go farther and longer. Great photos and thanks for the report Piney!

PineKnot- Great report. So much fun to read. Love your photos. Can't wait for part 2. :-)
Jonesy 08/15/2011 10:28PM
Great report so far...but will pass final judgement when part 2 is posted :-)
TomT 08/15/2011 06:36PM
Thanks!

I also wanted to know what you stored your food in and if you hung or hid it?

The screen tent is from REI. They have this one that's got the permethrin coating. You can get the same thing without for $10 less. It works great unless the wind is blowing pretty good.

Another olive jar is needed. I really had to push to get everything back into the jar prior to departing.

Nice trip thus far PineKnot...hope you slowed down for some more fishing in the 2nd half.
RainGearRight 08/15/2011 10:26AM
Great read and photos! Can't wait for part 2. Thanks PineKnot

Really enjoyed this. I'm amazed your knee recovered well enough to do this. After the first trip in July it didn't look so good.

Very much looking forward to part two!

You're a tough dude to travel so far alone.

Awesome report!

I think the expressions on your face for the self portraits speak volumes to the level of contentment & satisfaction you reached on this trip. Well done!

Looking forward to Part 2.
wawasee 08/12/2011 12:38PM
Great part one of your trip report. Enjoyed the pictures and the descriptions that you gave. I also had a major knee operation so I understand what you were dealing with.

misqua 08/12/2011 10:09AM
A fabulous report, thank you very much. Some day I hope to make the same trip.

Great report. Glad you had a successful trip.

Pine Knot,

What a fabulous trip report - and it's only Part 1 - I enjoyed every word. There are some great photos too - really liked the shot of Cutty Creek showing the blue pack in the bow of your canoe. Also liked the picture of your trout dinner complete with mashed potatoes. Can't wait for the second installment!
