Not since the 1970's. It is a big muskie fishing flowage so you will likely see fishing boats. It seems to me I remember hearing something about the state buying land on the flowage so maybe there is public camping available. Way back when I went there we camped in the Northern States Power Company campground just down the road from the legendary Herman's Landing tavern, a fun place.

was there last summer with my family. Took one of our canoes, but was a bit overwhelmed by the size of the flowage. Camped in a central campground, and it was just windy enough to make canoeing any kind of distance a hassle. Very few canoes around, power boats are everywhere. I ended up renting a small fishing boat for a 24 hr period to do a little more sightseeing and fishing. We loved the area and Lake Chippewa Campground.

That is kindof the impression I get... The east end of the Turtle Flambeau is more canoe friendly and there are always area to explore....probably will do that again this year...plus Murray's landing is 4 hours away.

you've got me very interested in the Turtle Flambeau, dr bob. Have you stayed at multiple sites in your trips there, or do you base camp? Also, have you fished it much? Would the campsites sites be comparable to a BW site (fire grate, sitting area, privy)?

Yes - Turtle Flambeau campsites are defined the same as a BWCA legal site - each must have a steel fire grate and a wilderness latrine. The one on the site I had a couple years ago was the newer model latrine, square with the builtin toilet lid.

some sites even have tables.... we just base camp and don't fish. The eastern part is nice to paddle around... Murray's Landing is only about 4 hours from home.... definitely a place to go for BW shakedown to decide what you might be missing or need to change...
