I'll be flying instead of driving from the first time and wanted to see what others have used to protect there rod/reel during airline travel. The thing I'm fining is a lot of the cases only have a 2.5" tube and for the largest eye on my rode to fit it needs to be atleat 3.5". Aside from just using some PVC what have others used?

Thanks!

I carry my 2 piece rod with me. It goes into the overhead compartment on top of whatever is in there OR otherwise just keep it next to me (usually get a window seat). Reel goes into my carry on bag.

when i have a 1 piece i use a bazuka rod case , very strong and extends to at least a 7' rod .

I lent my rod case once to a Bass Pro most would know. After it came back it was in sorry shape with latches busted in several places. Nothing a few rivets wouldn't fix but some duct tape around fasteners would probably prevented the damage.

i also add some cloth/foam at the top where the rod tips are. and on an airplane i would duct tape the latch just to insure it doesnt pop open during transit.

I just purchased a 7' rod on Amazon. It was shipped in 3" schedule 40 foam core PVC. There was no way that rod could have been damaged. The core of all my fly rod cases are PVC covered with fabric.

If your rod breaks down carry it on with you. If not go to a plumbing supply store and get a piece of foam core your rod will fit in and two end caps. Glue one end on and tape the other end. It may not be as pretty as one you could buy but it's not going to break, it'll protect your rod and only cost you about $20.
