I've seen many sturgeon jump out of the water on Lac La Croix. the first time we spent time on LLC we saw hundreds jump out of the lake and we didn't have any idea what they were, we just knew they were massive. then some people in Ely told me they were sturgeon.

I've seen them in June and July, but the best time was the third week of June in 2007.

Got to meet some members of the Canadian Ministry of Natural Resources up around High Falls, just West of Quetico on a trip a year or so ago. They were netting, tagging and releasing sturgeon. In Little Eva, there is a 100 pound sturgeon tagged in 2005 and being tracked.

To put this in perspective, this fish would have been hatched in approximately 1908 - and has lived in this lake through both World Wars, Vietnam and to the current day.

It tends to come up to the base pool below the Falls frequently according to their monitors.

Takes 4 men to get a 100 pound sturgeon into a Lund for tagging, in case you were wondering. High Falls, Crown Land, Quetico

I think there was an article in the BW Journal not too long ago about Sturgeon...not sure which issue but I seem to remember reading about it.

They are being reintroduced to Georgia. Said it will take about 20 years before they can be legally fished.
I can't imagine catching a fish that size. I hope to be around when they are legal to fish in Georgia.

Saw one about 6 feet from my canoe this summer, but I was on a river near the twin cities. It looked to be about 4 feet long and moving very slowly. Very very cool sighting I must say.

I talked to an old guy on the tow boat who was headed up to Crooked. He said every once in a while they hook one there (Crooked), but never get a look. Intentionally fishing sturgeon from the canoe would be a HOOT!

The Ojibwe Indians depended heavily on lake sturgeon for meat, skin, oil, and other necessities. It is believed that a "glue" derived by boiling the spine of sturgeon was mixed with red ochre to make the durable paint used to create the pictographs scattered along the Minnesota-Ontario border waters.

I've tied into a number of sturgeon and landed a few. This while walleye fishing up on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River. It would be quite an experience out of a canoe.

There was a neat article on Sturgeon in the MN DNR May-June Conservation Volunteer magazine.

Here is where you can find it on the DNR Website.
