I'm heading up to Brule lake area next June, and I'm looking for a good map of the lake. It would be nice to get one with 5ft intervals. I've found the DNR map and a few others but none of them seem to be real great. Does anyone have a resource for a great map? And maybe a few Brule lake spots to try. Thanks much!

The Minnesota DNR is the original source of all lake depth maps in the state. What you find on their Lake Finder web site is as good as we have.

I've seen Coast Guard????? maps (Yellow maps-brown water if I remember correctly) that are very good topos.

Look much like US Geological Survey maps, only different color scheme.

You may have to Google to find either ones, but the guy with the Coast Guard maps got them in the twin cities.

I think the reality is that most all maps showing topo data in the bwca is getting this information from the same source which is on the DNR maps as well. And this data was often collected back in the early 1900s. There is some new data from new studies but generally on the bigger perimeter lakes. I think the DNR maps along with a depth finder is a pretty good way to start.

I believe that some of the lower flights of military aircraft have been mapping this area for quite a few years.
Perhaps this would explain the great detail on the Coast Guard (labeled on the map legend) and the Army Corps of Engineers or US Navy on the others.
They are by far the best quality I have ever seen. The person that had the series of Coast Guard maps was taking a trip from Lake Superior to Lac LaCroix.
