Anybody got any tips on how to seek out pike in late July and the beginning of August? It would be awesome if you have experience fly fishing for pike during this time period too! I am planning to go during this time and am really hoping to hook up with high numbers of pike if possible.
August 4th last summer I was on the northwest side of Ensign and for a short while in Splash. I caught a dozen pike, the biggest was 38". I was using various rapalas (7 & 9), and 3/4 oz rattletraps. The big one I got on an orange and brown rattletrap. Most of the areas I fished had grass below.
In those months the water is warm and the big Pike seek out cooler water. Look on the edge of weeds along dropoffs or on any mid-lake humps or points that drop off into deeper water. Also, rivers offer cooler water and the movement is good for oxygen levels in the midsummer period. You can still find Pike in the shallow weedy areas along shore but they are typically smaller.
