I love lake trout. Depending on the time of year you go the easier it will be to catch them. Lakers like a certain temperature of water and as the lakes warm up in summer the deeper they go. I think they are a easy fish to clean. I think they are worth any extra effort - in fact have planned entire trips to just catch them exclusively.

I plan a trip every May around fishing for lakers. Lakers are pretty easy to catch at this time of year because they are shallow. They seem to like water in the 50 degree range. To cook them I just gut them take the head off and put them in foil with lemon and butter and then just put them in the coals. I use the same lures I would use for northerns or walters, shiny spoons or rapalas. This year I'm planning on hitting Fat, Gun, And Takucmich lakes off of Lac La Croix so if any one has info on these areas I would appreciate it.

Some of the easiest fishing I have had for lake trout is in the few weeks following spring opener. they are up shallow this time of year. I have caught some nice fish anywhere you find a river/creek flowing into the lake, and some of the best action I have had was trolling floating rapalas. I've had excellent results trolling a medium sized mepps spinner as well.

I take a May trip every year just to fish lakers. Usually fish the large deep lakes near the Gunflint Trail. Lakers will be shallow this time of year but like to be near the deep cold water. We will generaly troll with spoons, rapala's or mepps spinners but I've also caught plenty just casting from my campsites. They are a great fish to eat also, I fillet them just like you would a walleye, put the wet fillet pieces in a plastic bag with a dry coating(louisiana fish fry), shake and fry-mmm-mmm good.
