Has anybody ever used the fake power leeches or gulp in the bwca?

Tried Gulp last year on Gabbro. Had just as much (moderate) success with 'normal' Twister plastics. Rapalas - original floaters and shallow shads - outperformed both of them on the 'eyes.

I've also used them on trips to Quetico. They worked OK but nothing special... live leeches definitly outperform them.

Usually pack in with leeches. Used Gulp worms and grubs last year in Grace/Phoebe. Caught lots of smallies ranging from very small to pretty large but got few Walleyes. I'm going to bring leeches this year to Malberg area.

There is an article in the most recent BWJ about using power leeches and plastics in general.

We had great success with the Gulp leeches last spring in the BWCA on walleyes, smallies and pike. We used both live leeches and Gulp and there was no difference in fishing production between the two in our unscientific tests. My brother went to using Gulp on day 2 and never looked back. The Gulp leeches are less prone to getting ripped off the hook. They also seem to track better and not spin and twist your line when trolled like live leeches can.

Under some conditions, live leeches will probably out-produce the fake variety. It may depend on the intensity of "the bite" and the type of fishing you're doing as well as some other factors.

We are heading to Quetico in June and will be using the Gulp leeches heavily. We will probably pick up some live leeches "just in case", but won't get them in bulk.

Good luck!

What do Gulp leeches taste like? I'd like to do a side by side taste between live leeches and Gulp leeches. I'll bet the Gulp leeches make me puke just as fast as real leeches.

Like so many other meats, they taste like chicken. LOL
