I'm pretty sure this has been covered here in the past, but with the ever changing fishing line industry I'd like to get the most updated info.

I hinted in another thread that I'd like to try braided line for laker jigging in deep water. I tried Spider Wire a few years ago and had problems with knot slippage and the line seemed to leave a black residue on my hands.

Can anyone make any suggestions for a good braid for this application. I would imagine I wouldn't need anything greater than 12# test. What do you think?

Fireline. Use a palomar knot and you wont have any slippage.

One more thing if I may, will I need a mono backer? If so, how much?

I have used Stren Super Braided for the last 4 years or so....love it, superior knot strength, no problems with line twist/memory, great casting, and holds up vs. northern teeth! I use 8 lbs test. I found some at Fleet Farm for cheap (with rebate too)...however, I think its being discontinued and replaced with the Fuse...same stuff with a coating over it to make it smoother.

Two feet of flourocarbon as a leader wouldn't hurt. Tie each line to a swivel or use a double overhand knot.

I like Power Pro lines. If you are using a spinning real you will need some Mono backer or what I do is put some electric tape around the spool then put my line over that. That will keep the brade from slipping around your spool. Also the Floro leader idea is a good one, I usually do this when fishing clear water or shallow water.

10 or 12lb test would be plenty. Especially if you are using a fluoro leader of less strength. Also, a thinner line will let you go deeper if you do any trolling. The uni knot works well on braided line.

suffix. No wind knots and it casts like a dream.
