Fishing is hit or miss like most any other time of the year. They will be biting but you may have to work to find them.
Bugs are around but not deadly as they are in early to mid June. Ticks are gone, skeeters still come out at night, horse flies and dear flies can be problematic.
Early August may stil have a few berries still around
Crowds are there but not as bad as July. It is still busy and still lots of 8-9 person groups from church groups, scout groups etc.
Bring your long johns as the temps start the transition phase and can be anything from 90's during the day to freezing or even a bit below at night. Averages probably are 70's for highs with 40-50's for lows. Of course the cooler temps occur more frequently closer to the end of August. Thunderstorms will occur but they are usually not quite as severe as they can be in June and July. The sun sets earlier and earlier so by the end of the month it is going down around 8:00 instead of after 9:00 right now.
You will have a great time-go and hope th fish are biting.

I agree with the above plus I will add that depending on the year water levels will be a little lower in August.
Swimming on the other hand will be more enjoyable then say Memorial day weekend.
Food will go bad faster in August then May or June if you not careful.
Actually you can't go wrong at any time in the BWCA. Your in the BwCA for pete's sake. Enjoy it for all it is.

August Pros:berries, swimming, fishing(especially bass), bugs (usually August bugs are better than late June/July. Cons:fishing (trout are way deep this time of year) and people. September is my favorite time of the year.
I have to agree with BigZig - every month is a great month to be in the BW.
