What can we expect the fishing to be like between Sept 16 and 21 in the Lake Insula area? Walleye?

Walleyes, Northerns and catch and release the Bass, because it'll be after their season.

Yeah, you'll catch NP and walleyes, but I don't think there are any smallmouth in Insula.

We were on Insula the last week of July, and caught all 3 species, but more small mouth than anything else.

There are smallies, but walleyes and northerns I think are more dominant than the smallies on Insula.

Insula is full of smallmouth bass. Fish around the rock islands and look for deep drops off rocky shoals etc. Around a place called "The Rock" there is great smallmouth area. We caught them left and right during our June trip. On the route that takes you to the portage to Kiana there are many great smallmouth bass hangouts.

We camped on the island campsite just south of "The Rock". It's a nice site and is high above the lake right there giving you a great view to the west but yet is protected against the wind pretty well.

I stand corrected. I have never caught a smallie on Insula or even have seen one caught and they're not listed in the Furtman BWCA fishing guide book. Insula is a great lake with some monster NP.I usually fish walleyes and apparently missed out on the smallie action.

I usually catch smallies up the river toward Alice near the mouth of the Kawishiwi River and along the river some good northerns. I have never fished the main lake although I know there are a lot of good fishing areas there.

Arkansas Man is correct. There is also great smallmouth water below the falls where the Kawishiwi River dumps into Insula and then opens up into some flat water. Then the water narrows down as the river heads north before turning out into the water where Williamson Island is. There is a good campsite at the base of the falls of the Kawishiwi there but it's a long paddle to get there from the entry point on Lake One. It can be reached in one day but it's a long haul and if you're toting in live bait that's in a pack and filled with oxygen from the bait shop, the O2 will not last long enough for you to get to the falls there. We were trying to get that far but after nine hours of paddlind and portaging, the slower craft members asked to stop for the day. We did and camped on that island campsite just south of The Rock. We based camped there for four nights and fished all over Insula up toward Kiana and all the way to the falls I typed about earlier and even up into the L of the Kawishiwi between there and Alice. Great fishing there!Drag a lure behind you whenever you're paddling and you'll catch fish. You can't catch em if you don't have a line in the water though. I think too many would-be anglers complain about poor fishing but fail to fish when they are paddling. A good rod holder like the Rod Sentry enables you to paddle and fish very easily.

The channel between Insula and the Kawishawi is great samllie fishing. The Rock isn't so great. I had a campsite in direct view of the rock. We caught nothing. No one else caught anything.
