Last year, I heard a walleye tour pro tout odd-ball jigs. He said that he won many tournaments with the jigs. He liked the design because it made the bait standup on the bottom of the lake.

I've used them a few times and they do seem to work a bit better than pain ball jigs.

What jigs do y'all like???

BAIT, like LIVE bait????!! It is called fishing, not trapping. Do you hunt deer on your corn feeder? Live bait should be illegal. just my opinion...Please read Sir Isaak Walton...

I'm not going to take the bait for that debate.

But I will say that bait could be plastic too...

I have to plug Captain Redbeards walleye killers. I bought some from him at the Blueberry Fest. They are high quality and catch fish.

I like to use a Northland Shiner jig when I fish with 4" Gulp Minnows or hollow bellied swimbaits. The longer shank realy makes a difference in the amount of strike/hook-up conversions. I use a little dab of Super Glue to help hold the bait on the jig.

bassnut, you're going to open a whole "can of worms" with that statement on this site.

By the way, I prefer Irish jigs.

I like bulk jigs in unpainted 'cause they are cheaper. Plus, they don't pass judgement on people. Live and let live, says the bulk jig. Unpainted bulk jigs don't think their methods are the only acceptable methods becasue they realize that would be small-minded and doesn't take into consideration multiple viewpoints.
Really, though, I think jigs that get in front of fish's faces are the best jigs.

I won't take the bait on this one either Mad_Angler (well, perhaps a little)

It would be impossible to follow the Oath of Dignity and Respect with my REAL answer!!

But if someone feels that it's cheating to use a single hook/jig tipped with a worm, leech or minnow, but totally fair to use an artificial lure with 6 to 9 hooks, who am I to argue??? :)

I just started to pour my own jigs last winter. Really a neat activity that lets me have some pride. I prefer the standard "gumball" jig. I learned from my uncle to make them with a Short Shank Hook and bait saver. My favorite, GOLD, hands down.

Okay, I admit to playing agitator. Anyway, I pour Arkie-style bass jigs, and round head with collar from 1/16 to 3/4...takes care of all species 'cept cats. Been swimming a jig a LOT the last few years, probably get a mold for that style. I can fish behind guys frothing the water with spinnerbaits and buzzers, and still catch fish.

I like the VMC jigs. I like the eyeball part. Pink/while head with a pearl/silver 4" gulp minnow was a killer last year.

The oddball jigs look like a killer as well though. I like the way the bait stands up off the bottom. If I needed to do a slow retrieve I could see how that presentation would work better.

my choice too- the eyeball makes a big difference and the bait-holder really helps keep plastic baits on the jig.

Way to go Bassnut, Finally 1 person who shares my views as well. Don't worry about the crap your going to receive from a statement like that as bait fisherman's only care about themselves and could care less about what they dump into our lakes. Just my Uber-minority opinion. (Sorry to step on your toes again guys). It would be nice if they had some single hook/barbless hook/and no live bait lakes in the bwca that have not yet been walleyinized.

Chilly,
I am making it my life's goal to hunt you down (if you get my meaning)
It would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with Minnesota bait regs before making posts, and see how many changes have been made to protect the environment.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:(

TGO, Some of many questions I have.

1. Are all species of minnows and leeches sold at bait shops native and currently present in all bwca lakes?

2. What are the regs on Superior WI bait shops?

3. How many people keep the minnows they buy in fish tanks at home or live wells at the end of there dock before bringing them up?

Please inform me so I can better understand your view point.

Regular jig with 3' twister tail works for me.

One question through,
has anyone had any luck with the Walleye Weapon jigs??
I got some at Canoecopia a few years ago, there was a guy that spent much of his 'BWCA Fishing' speech promoting them. No luck so far for me.

Those are made by Captain Redbeard. I think he posts on here occasionally. Those are the same jigs salukiguy referenced above. I have heard many people praise those jigs. With the spinner when fish are more aggressive I could see them working better. BUT never used them myself.

I talked with Captain Redbeard this weekend at the Madison Fishing Expo. I bought a set of jigs and talked with him for quite a while. He seemed very nice and knowledgable.

I've used the jigs a little bit in the past and did not catch anything. I think it is like any lure. If you trust it and have confidence in it, you'll throw it a lot. If you throw it a lot, you'll catch fish with it.

Chilly, I'll try to answer as best I can:
1. Yes, all minnows sold in shops are present in the BWCA. Exception being what they call a Ruby Red that a few shops handled. I do not know their status currently. They looked like a reddish/gold fathead.
2. You'll have to look at Wisconsin DNR regulations.
3. Cannot know or regulate what people do on their own. In Minnesota, you are allowed to trap your own bait (for personal use) with a Minnesota fishing license, but it is illegal to have over 24 dozen minnows in your possession (including leeches) if you do this.

There are many new regulations in Minnesota, which are too numerous to comment on.

Sometimes I add a beetle spin to a jig to give it flash. It seems to keep the jig from getting caught up in the rocks as much. Does it catch more fish? Hmm. Maybe. Sometimes.
