Will be going in EP 26 in June. Plan to work our way up to south Basswood lake passing through Wood Lake, Hula Lake, and Good or Indiana Lake. Just curious as to the luck other have had fishing any of these lakes.

We had great walleye and small mouth fishing on Wood Lake a couple years ago. Caught some nice smallies and large mouth on Good Lake. This was in August. June should be way better :) Have a great trip!

That is great! Hopefully you didn't catch them all and there are some left when we go. Smallies and walleye are a group favorite for catching!! Thanks for the info snakecharmer.

I was up there 2 years ago in late may. Fishing was great on most of the lakes you listed. If you are in a canoe I would not suggest basswood unless you know the lake and can find fish. We didn't do well there, it's huge and big waves. Motorize boats don't make it any more fun. I absolutely loved Indiana lake, it's a small deep lake with lots of fish, mainly bass and pike. it's short on camp sites so if one is open take it. good luck!!

Hang on to your fishing rod if you troll through the narrows on Good Lake. My son got "snagged" when we went through there. When we went back to retrieve the snag, it started moving! Turns out the snag was a very large pike. I got a good look at it before it snapped the line and was gone. It was a GATOR!

Wood is good for walleyes.

We hit Good, Basswood, Indiana, and Wood last year in late August. Basswood was fun but motor boats everywhere. Good has an amazing campsite in the middle of the lake next to the saddle, there was a cow moose with twins across from camp we saw twice. Indiana is clean, rocky and deep. I caught a massive sucker there, scared the sh*t out of me - I never expected one of those.

Wood is a shallow lake in a low lying area and was great for walleye. We caught no walleye on Good, Basswood, or Indiana.

Have fun!

Thanks for the info everyone. Only a couple in our group have been to the BWCA before so hopefully it is a good experience. These reports have me very excited as the fishing is a Big reason we are going!! If I may ask, are there any particular techniques that may work best?

Wood usually seems to have some relatively shallow walleyes that can be had by trolling original rapalas or husky jerks along shoreline breaks. Keep to the shadow side of the lake when you can. I can never resist showing this pic when appropriate: Wood Lake husky jerk walleye. BWCA PR.

About Good Lake. Not a fishing story but anyway. Have stayed at the site in the middle twice. My fav was the morning I couldn't make coffee because a large snapper was busy depositing eggs one by one next to the stump by the firepit. Being that it is quite aways up to say the least we wondered about her skills getting up to lay eggs. After about an hour she ambled off and we started our day with coffeee and discussed the way back down for her. Shortly we heard a rock fall and more noise getting louder followed by a tremendous splash. we got to the edge to see the ripples of a 20 foot dropping turtle. Very nice.

I am thinking about a early fall trip to this area. There seems to be little in the way of campsite and portage info.

When you make your trip in June could you pass on what you find with regards to campsite, portage and fishing info.

Thanks in advance and have a great trip.

The portage into Wood is longer, but easy. The only difficult portage is from Hula into Good. It can be very muddy, even in mid August when we were there. The best campsite is the one at the narrows on Good. Elevated. The landing isn't the best, but the site is very nice. Look for some weed beds/humps and you will find some big pike. Big largemouth on west side of lake too, from narrows to NW corner.

Did Wood-Good-Basswood trip last summer (Late June). Caught lots of walleyes on wood right off the campsite. We camped on the northernmost campsite with the long rock peninsula. Also, caught lots of eyes at night by the submerged stumps in the bay across from the campsite.

We got onto basswood as a storm was rolling in and had quite a difficult paddle in the wind and waves.

We had our best fishing on Wood Lake and wished we would have just stayed there the whole trip!

We'll be taking our first trip to that area as well, mostly for fishing and some traveling. Any gear recommendations that is a must?
