I do this alot. I have a few questions. Are you taking a boat or canoe? If canoe, do you want to fish a big lake or small lake(s)? Do you want to target walleye, lakers, smallmouth, or pike? Tent or camper?

Sorry, I can't really help with stream trout. I guess you could look at the state parks; Gooseberry Falls, Tettegouche, Cascade River, or Judge Magney. If you don't want to camp in a state park there is a campground along the Temperance River a little ways up the Sawbill trail.

Check out the campground at Island Lake about 10 miles north of Duluth on Highway 4. I think it is run by the Northern Sportsmen Club or something like that. You can fish for walleyes and northerns right from shore or walk down to the bridge (about 4 blocks). We used to fish there all the time when I was growing up.

What about staying at the Fall Lake campground just outside of Ely and doing a day trip from there? No permits needed for a daytrip, just fill out the self issue permit at the EP. You could get up to Pipestone Falls in about 2 hours or so directly from the campground or hit any number of other EPs for the day.
