Hi, I can catch crawfish no problem but I haven't had the best luck fishing with them. Wondering what everyone does to put them on a hook and catch a toothy critter with them? Thanks-wildone
WildOne; although I have not used live crawfish for bait in the BW, I have used them extensively at Bull Shoals Lake where they are preferred food for LM, SM and Spotted Bass, as well as Walleye. The rig is simple, a #2 Light wire bronze hook and a single split shot about 8 to 12 inches above the hook. Bend the crawfish's tail down and run the hook under and back out of a shell band at about the middle of the tail. The trick is to either vertically fish the bait a few inches off the bottom, or if casting keep it moving along the bottom back to you. If left still on the bottom for even a few seconds, the crawfish will crawl under something and you'll be snagged. The light wire hook comes in handy when this happens. Also, if you get a hit, be patient, open your reel and let the fish run with the bait for 10-15 seconds. The reason being the fish will pick up the bait and will start swimming while it turns the crawfish to swallow it tail first. A quick hookset will result in many misses.
Many years ago when my boys were younger, we'd catch crawfish and use Thill slipbobbers with a small splitshot about 2 feet above a #6 or #4 red treble hook...deadly rig for smallies around shoreline rock piles/cliffs with deep water ledges nearby...
