While fishing recently, my knots kept coming undone, I lost hook after hook, is it the line?

What is the best knot and what about line test and type for Walleye, Smallies, Northerns in BWCA?

The best knot is "not" to go out drinking the night before a trip!

I like the palomar knot. Very easy and very strong.

TGO,

I asked you about the knots and you told me your whole life story and about your nutz, I said knots. You must have been hung over. The liquor store is strategicly positioned 50 feet from for Fish Story Emporium.

Thanks for the knots posting. I'll practice, I'm thinking of going 10lb test do think that is okay and what brand?

Oh man, I wasn't talking about my nutz, I said you were nuts:)
Stop in next time in town and we'll try to help you out with a knot clinic.
Use 6 or 8 lb test line, plenty heavy.

I would second 6 or 8 lb test.

I'll wait and get my line at the TGO, maybe he can school me on crank baits (old crank) and knotz.

Hee hee

I like the Palamar knot looks easy.

The palomar knot is VERY strong and lends itself well for tying hooks. It is a bit cumbersome if tying to a larger 2 hook crankbait. If using lures, I'll use the knot to tie on a small safety pin snap. Makes changing lures easier too. In my experience, if I break off on a snag, the line always breaks someplace other than the knot.

Good fishing.

I've never used the safety pin snap, I will have to look that up.

Hear you go Buddy. I prefer the ones without the swivel, the smaller the better, about 1/2 inch.

I had been using a snap swivel gold color, but those look pretty good. My gold ones sometimes fall apart.

Thanks

Palomar all way. Especially for braided line.

I use the palomar for plain hooks or jigs, but clinch knot on all other lures except crank baits and surface plugs. I just find the clinch knot quicker to tie on anything other than a hook or jig.
For crank baits I use a knot (rapala knot?), that provides a small loop at the connection to the lure which doesn't impair the action of the lure.

I almost always tie the uniknot, but noticed that when I started using lower test lines for river fishing that I had more breakoffs. I switched to the palomar and noticed far fewer issues. I still tie the uniknot in most situations over 8 pound test because it's quicker for me. If there's no split ring to tie to, I'll tie a Rapala knot...easy once you get the hang of it, and it definitely helps the action of the lure. All 3 should be easily Googleable (if that's a word!)

Main things: remember to moisten with spit before tightening knot, and leave a little longer tag (1/4") if using braid. Tight lines!
