So this will be my first time up in the BWCA, which will finally allow me to cross off another item on my bucket list. I have done a lot of fishing, but nothing out of a canoe and nothing as far north. I've read a lot about May, June, July and then September bass, pike, or walleye fishing- but everyone seems to not mention August. I am going to be out for 3 full days and we're leaving from Voyageur Canoe Outfitters at the end of the Gunflint Trail.

So my question is where should I go for some mid to late-August fishing? What's hot- bass or walleye? Anything I should look for or expect from fish this time of year?

Food chain in high gear...fish early, late, cloudy conditions, night(?). points, saddles between islands...troll over deepest part of lake using DEEP cranks for BIG Pike.
No secret thing here...Find possible fishing areas NOW by doing homework: check topo maps for islands, sharp drops, ask outfitter about weedbeds...areas to fish. Predators will at a certain area because of food fish.
Windblown shoreline at sunset...a Countdown Rap, maybe a big thumper Spinnerbait...dude, dreams are made there!

Look for dark tanin-stained lakes!
I have caught nice walleyes as shallow as 6-7 feet in august on the darker lakes.
In clear lakes the fish go deeper and are tougher to catch.

So your next question - which ones?

Phoebe Lake (off the north shore - Kawishiwi Lake entry) has produced well for me (caught my biggest smallie there) not a guarantee but I have not been skunked.

Smoke and Burnt Lakes (just east of Sawbill) can be very good but can be hit or miss - I have not been skunked there.

Pine Lake on the WEST side - Trout Lake entry.

All of these are easy lakes to get to.
I have a couple that our group has sworn to secrecy but they are all tanin stained/dark lakes...

Thanks wb4syth, but those are all well west of the Gunflint Trail and so I doubt I could make it over there. I was looking at maybe dropping in EP 54 or 55
