Has anybody else caught any turtles in BW. I have caught 5 so far

My buddy caught one with a canoe paddle.

You caught 5 turtles? With what? You intentionally fish turtles up there? For what; grilling, soup?

By hand. They come after our fish that are on the stringer. I have them on video but no pics.

I don't eat them i just put them in the canoe and take them someplace else away from our fish. I'm not sure how to clen them.

Quite a few restaurants down here prepare them in a soup. Can also buy just the meat, already cleaned down here. I wouldn't try this out in a wilderness setting though...as tasty as the dish is.

I've seen a couple in BW; around the stringer . We used to set jugs and feed them shellcorn in a concrete spring until July 4 to clean them out a bit. (I've only seen ONE as big as the posted pic!) My buddy's wife would boil them in saltwater with some beer added, flour and brown in a skillet, then bake in covered pans with a little water at 325 to finish. Excellent table fare!

Down here it's illegal, they make something called "mock turtle soup" with about 4 different meats in it. I don't really see the point

I ate snapping turtles years ago. Wonder how much PCB and mercury I consumed from them old buggers

Not in the BW, but my boyfriend caught a snapper while we were (bobber) fishing on Bear Island Lake in Ely a few years ago. At first thought he was just hung up on a tree, after feeling some movement thought it was a Northern......then about 10 feet from the boat it reared it's big ugly dinosaur looking head. My older dog who LOVES fishing and is always right next to you anxiously waiting for the fish to come out of the water took one look at it and ran straight to the other side of the boat :-) Of course he had to keep reeling it in to get a better look as I'm saying "just cut the damn line!" (which I finally did when it was about 2 feet away, I had enough). Those things freak me out. Also had a snapper steal our string of fish during my BW trip in '99.

With a paddle- put it under them and lift them up. Great fun.

I got a very similar story, 2K10. I was running jugs for channel cat on a farm pond in a little jon boat, and one of the jugs was wrapped up in the cattails (snappers always do that). My dog, like yours, was right next to me anxiously awaiting what he thought would be a fish coming out of the water when I finally got it untangled, but when I flipped the big snapper into the bottom of the boat he freaked! He backed up into the very front of the boat, getting as far away from that critter as he could, barking at it like crazy. After I motored the boat back out into the pond, the turtle (which was at least 5 ft away from him) hissed and snapped and poor old Sparky jumped but didn't have anywhere to go but backwards into the pond! I quickly shut off the trolling motor, but already had enough forward speed so that he disappeared under the boat, and I could hear his head go 'donk, donk' on the bottom of the boat as it passed over him. He was OK, though, and I pulled him out of the water as soon as he surfaced behind the boat, laughing my butt off! He was wet and looked just pathetic, hanging his head 'cause he knew he did something really dumb. Brought the turtle and the dog onshore, and Sparky proceeded to growl and bark at the big reptile, trying to redeem himself by demonstrating his bravado, but definitely keeping his distance!

Still makes me smile when I think about it. I love that dog!

If you do choose to eat one remember that there is an open and a closed season on them - I forget when it runs. I've been meaning to try it, although the old buggers would be loaded with mercury. Maybe I'll try with a young softshell.

I haven't caught any in the BW (yet) but I've caught them fishing with bait in rivers many times. Mostly Softshells (for sure Spiny Softys, maybe a few Smooths - not sure), though I've caught a couple Snappers, a couple Painted and a ?Box? turtle as well.

Funny story Bonvicken. Apparently Sparky is pretty smart. If one of those bad boys came at me, I'd go overboard too.

I agree, I would have done the same as Sparky - and would also hang my head with embarrassment after :-) Great story Bonvicken!
