I just got back yesterday and the mayfly hatch is in full swing. Plan your boxes accordingly!

OK...I'll admit it...I don't know the implications of that. I am headed out tomorrow at noon...what should I add to the box?

Another question; how long do the hatch and it's effects usually last? What have you all noticed?

depends on the weather,last summer there were mayflys hatching in early august yet. mayflys generally hatch everyday at around sunset which sets up a surface bite at that time of the day. don't ignore the wind the following morning in the area's where mayflys are being pushed into shorelines or channels between islands.I have seen fishing get tough when the hatch is really heavy do to easy pickins for the fish.

Mayfly hatch was last week on Ensign. It did not slow the catching down at all. Leeches were the ticket.

NORMALLY northern's do not eat mayfly's. so I would focus on them. after what we just encountered I would definitely say that the hatch had effected the fishing on Wood lake, Good Lake, and from the sounds of things Hoist Bay and Wind Bay on Basswood lake. local was telling me stories of four people who went out and pulled in 60 walleyes, he also said wood lake was packed with canoes taking advantage of this... these stories were from last week. this week there were 0 canoes on wood and roughly that many walleyes pulled out of said lake in 2 days of fishing with leeches. walleyes and bass tend to gorge themselves on mayfly's.

Was in Quetico from the 13th to 23rd...only saw a few adults and only a couple carcasses especially compared to this time last year. Where we were the larvae seem to be on the bottom waiting to hatch...caught many spitting them up or in throat. Caught one small smallmouth that spit up several had 3 in his throat along with 2 leeches.
