All of the telescoping poles I have seen over the years have been of cheap quality and break easy. Go 2 piece minimum or better yet a 1 piece and pack and transport in a good rod tube. You dont want your one and only rod to break on your trip. So I always bring two, one for trolling, drifting and a med light action for slip bobbering.
I always use my Plano rod tube and tie it to the thwarts with a couple of Grip Twists. No broken poles.

We had Two of these on a trip one time. Broke the first one on the first day and the second one on the second day of the 5 day trip. the problem I found was if the section of rod telescopes in even just a little it will snap like a tooth pick. If you are sight seeing while you fish and occasionally reel you lure up to the tip of your rod it can cause the rod to telescope in just a little. Next thing you know.....Fish on, then snap!!!!
Do not bring one. I have since convinced everyone to bring a one or two piece that never gets packed until we take out on the last day, we have since picked up a couple 4 pc rods for back-ups rods. They only come out of the pack if we need them.

One of my buddies uses a short rod from http://www.emmrod.com/ The quality of the equipement is actually pretty good. I haven't personally seen him fish with it yet, but he is bringing it on our trip in June. Hopefully I can give a better review then.
My son uses a telescoping pole. It really isn't made for heavy fishing. For your random sunfish or bass it is fine. I use a 3 piece rod. I do find putting a rod together a littl annoying, but after watching one of my friends break a Loomis rod on a portage I am going to stick to the multi piece rod. The other good option is just to get a ugly stick and not be bummed if it breaks.
