What are some useful products to discourage flies and skeeters?

deet, permethrin, bandanas, long clothing, thermo-nuclear warfare.

I'll also add smoke, wind, full body mosquito nets, and napalm.

I use wind. Camp on western points and never too deep into the trees. Deep enough for shade, but not so deep that you lose the western wind.

I used a spray permethrin on my clothes for ticks and skeeters. I did not have one bug bite in my last June 15th trip. Spray on 100% DEET also on a bandanna and wrap around your hat to keep flies away.

Stay home? BUT I don't like to stay home so I use Permithrin, DEET (500%), I will also use the wind if there is any when getting to my base camp lake and Deep Woods Off. Lots of the three chemicals make for a fine skeeter deterent cocktail.
Spray your clothes with Permithrin.
I bought fitgers2 some sticky fly strips to hang from her hat brim. I let you know next week in my trip report how that goes over.

Spray Hat down really good with deet, let it dry a few minutes then take off. When you get to camp use smoke to treat the rest of your clothes. If you have ever accidentally gotten a taste of bug dope you can imagine what it might taste like to fish when you handle your pole bait and line. Smoke on the other hand lets hope is less of a deterrent.

Like everyone else permithrin and deet. I just got back and I don't think they were that bad.
Here is a tip that will save your legs. KEEP YOUR DOORS SHUT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE WHEN LOADING GEAR INTO YOUR VEHICLE!!!!! I got more bites on my legs on the ride home then I did 7 days in the BDUB. The little bass/turds waited under my seat till it got dark and then feasted on me.

Head net (essential), deet. You also might try Natrapel with picaridin. Long pants and thick socks for the flies! Nothing else stops em. For the deet, small spray bottles are nice, like Sawyer's MaxiDeet and even smaller bottles. I also used some 30% Ben's wipe on's that weren't bad. Also bring Afterbite. Have everything handy at all times. Don't worry, they won't ruin your trip.
