Going to BWCA in early July and was looking for good fishing spots and tips for Big Moose and Cummings Lake. I heard Walleye are plentiful in Big Moose?? What about Cummings? Can I make a week long fishing trip out of just these 2 lakes? Thanks

No nothing of Big Moose but Cummings and Otter are great lakes. A week on those two is questionable. Cummings/Otter are good SM and NP lakes. It would be hard for me to not be on Walleye water for 7 days

It is a short portage from Cummings to Korb, where you can find good largemouth and NP fishing

Read what MN DNR lakefinder has to say about Big Moose. Used to be good but sounds like it's in decline to some extent. I think a week is a long time, but then I never stay in the same campsite two nights in a row.

Walleye in Big Moose, Cummings has Bass, Northern, and reported Walleye by the Buck portage. As far as a one week trip??? There are plenty of side trips you can make from Cummings that would eat up your week.

Try trolling the narrows on Cummings on the northwest side, going towards Otter, for northern pike.

The rapids into Otter are good for bass.

I had some customers (who were pretty reliable, not prone to too much BS), that said they caught walleye on the north side of Cummings, near the shoreline. The area is just before the narrows & you can see a couple small "islands" there.

Coxey Pond is great for smallies.

And, the whole area is good for blueberries around the end of July, but you might find some earlier!

I did well with a jointed rapala near the island. One afternoon I walked around the perimeter of the island and caught a lot of SM. (this is the island with the campsite).

I agree with VoyageurNorth for the most part, but would also add plain hook with a leech. I'm sure it was just an oversight on Lynn's part, as she just sits in the office all day and does crossword puzzles, and hollers at poor John. This at times, leads to confusion! :)

Jim, do you use Gamakatsu hooks?

Are you still making candles & trying to burn your shop down? I'd like to get some if you still have candles.

Actually, the best hooks are Kahle, #6 or #8, for hooking fish. Use them without a sinker, whenever possible, tipped with a leech or part of a crawler.
I am not a fan of the Gamakatsu! Yup, we still be making candles-call me in the morning:)

I'm on my way home around then & don't get back to the shop until around 2 pm.

We spent the last week at Big Moose and Cummings. We stayed on the campsite near the trail on the north end of the lake. It was an excellent site for camping and fishing. We caught smallies, northern and rock bass from the rocks. We fished between and around the islands just to the west. We caught smallies and walleye on anything we threw in the water. Smallies still had eggs.

We fished some on Cummings at the north end from the island campsite near the Big Moose to Cummings portage and between that campsite and the Korb River. Caught as many smallies as we wanted to.

HawkFisher,

Yes, Big Moose has walleyes. We caught them between the islands at the north end of the lake on both crawlers under slip bobber and minnows. We only fished a small portion of the lake and didn't even fish the south or west shoreline. The walleye we caught were 2-3 lbs.

I caught and released an 8 pound walleye in July 2002 on Big Moose. To date my biggest BWCA walleye. This after a day of catching tons of 1 pounders. The east side campsite we stayed at seemed small and cramped. I would say it wasn't used too much as the resident red squirrel left when we arrived, not to return.
