Two years ago I went to the boundry waters and decided to buy about 3 dozens live leeches and they ended up being in the way of portaging and it turned out to be a hassel to keep them. I was just wondering if anyone had any luck on those 3 in. gulp leeches. I know leeches work good for walleye and I was wondering if they worked well?

They are OK for a subsitute. 'Slimers' are even better. imo

They work at times but there is no substitute for the real deal. That being said, I rarely bring live bait in anymore.

Imo the secret to any of these Gulp products is not to "pretend" it's live bait. I use a heavier jig and it's up to me to put some action on this thing to trigger a bite.

I've had success with them. I've also had quite a bit of success with the 3 inch shad minnow in black and white.

Honest question, you said they were a hassle on portages. Why were they a hassle? They are the easiest bait the keep. Keep them in the water until you need them and then put the leeches is a mesh bag to go fishing. Last trip we had 8 guys in our group and we took three pounds of live leeches. They were no big deal to carry in a Leech King bait holder. We fished hard and only had eight left at the end of the trip. We caught a lot of fish and I'm not sure we would have done so good with Gulp leeches. Were you using the small containers with the see through lid? Then I would agree, they would be a problem. Get a leech King.

For the first time this year, I broke from my own constitutions and tried the Gulp leeches. They suck! (no pun intended).

For what I paid for them, I was expecting something at least close to the feel of a real leech. No way! Rather than emulate the real thing, I found these to be closer to the consistency of tractor tire material soaked in some putrid chemical soup and couldn't catch a fish, to boot

I am inclined to side with Savage Voyageur on this one. If keeping leeches alive on a Boundary Waters trip is a problem, then I recommend that you not endeavor to raise a pet.

Nice fish SC! Were you using the Gulp minnows or leeches? I did do well with the minnow tipped Cleo for Lakers. Couldn't catch an eye with the leech/jig combination. maybe I'll have to give them another try.

This past July, I used Gulp Leaches for the first time. After a period of learning, they worked just fine. You do have to give them a tiny bit of action. Like most baits or lures, presentation is key.

We use both the leeches and the minnows. I've had many occasions now to fish live leeches next to GULP!. There are times when live bait will outfish artificials, and visa versa. It all depends :)

I got some slimers this yr and the action is unreal. They are lifelike when you get them in the water. You can add your favorite scent to it for added appeal. They are much more realistic then Gulp. IMHO

JB - How did the slimers produce for you guys?

We really didn't do much fishing on our trip. I will say when I put one on a hook and played around with it from shore in clear water, you'd be hard pressed to tell if it was the real thing or not.
I'll be bring them up next spring. I also picked up the 4" dew crawlers. These slimers get my endorsement.
