We are entering at Lake One on Wednesday the 20th for our first BWCA trip. We will be base camping on Insula for 6 days. Any fishings spots you would recommend? Species is not all that important.

I would understand if you didn't want to post them here, but if you have information you'd be will to share, you can email me at:

Insula in a day is doable - depending on traffic and your navigation skills ;-) - however depending on the age of your son, and desires you may want to take it a bit easier and take two days. (I find that kids get BORED base camping).

If you fish there are some great rapids at Hudson offering a lot of concentrated fun - see the maps secion.

Thanks for the reply Beemer01. My son is 12, and we have been practice paddling on a local lake for the last couple of weeks. He does a good job, but it will probably take us two days to get to Insula.

I got back from a trip entering Lake One and exiting Snowbank a week ago. Paddled through Insula and spoke to several groups that reported Walleyes and Lakers hitting on Rapala Tail Dancers trolled at about 15 ft.

I'll email.

But.. I had a 22 year old and a 19 year old-extremely athletic, and me, and I'm in pretty good shape.

Depending on wind, Insula in one day is doable, but not fun. Find a spot about 5pm, (we settled a little west of Hudson and fished that location with reasonable success after dinner), and you'll get there the next am in better spirits.

we went to insula over memorial day weekend. We left at about 8:00 from kawishiwi lodge with 6 guys, 3 newbies in the group, and made it to insula by 2:00 through pouring rain the whole way. We didnt push really hard, not much wind, had a GPS for navigation, and didnt take any extended breaks though. We ended up staying on the southern end of insula and fished around there in between rain. There was a lot of traffic on the way out, we crossed at least one party at every portage. Thats all I got for ya. Have a great trip!

I got carried away and forgot the fish info....we had the most luck drifting and jigging with twisters and leeches around points and islands, fish were spotty though and a very mixed bag, smallies , pike, and walleyes. we didnt get to fish as much as I like due to the weather but got enough for a couple of meals.

Just got back yesterday from the lake one to snowbank loop. Did Lake one to Insula in 6 hours, fighting the wind on Lake one but with the wind the rest of the way. As of last week, lake one two three four were fairly vacant, lots of open sites and not much traffic. The rapids at Hudson had about 12 guys fishing it, people wading out in the water, etc, we just portaged on.

We layed over on Insula and caught some fish, nothing spectacular. We moved on to Alice, and had the lake to ourselves for the most part. did see one other canoe. Caught some good Northern and Walleyes.

By the time we made it to dissapointment Lake, it was a zoo, people everywhere and no open campsites, ended up coming out a day early due to no place to camp. Insula is huge, you could camp at one end for a day or two, and then move to the other end, and go to Alice, and then back. I didn't spend much time fishing for Wallys on Alice but it looks like a lot of good spots. make sure you get a map with underwater topos. We were having the most luck for Wallys and Northerns where the 30, 20, and 10 foot depths are tight together showing a rapid drop off.
